Lake Placid has a hometown atmosphere with friendly folks and business owners. It is filled with many fun and interesting things to do. It is the “Caladium Capital of the World” with beautiful caladium fields and a Caladium Festival in August of each year. Our town is also known as the “Town of Murals” with 42 hand painted murals including Melvin Dewey of New York, known for changing the name of then Lake Stearns to Lake Placid back in 1928. Since Lake Placid is also known for citrus and cattle, there is even the popular Cattlemens Mural with sound effects. There are also numerous antique shops, home style restaurants, and local merchants.
With the “Toby the Clown” School located on the Town Circle, you may even be greeted by a clown as you walk down the sidestreets.
In nearby Sebring, (less than 15 minutes away) you can visit one of the State’s award winning parks – Highlands Hammock State Park or even the world famous Sebring International Raceway and Regional Airport. The Sebring Raceway is well known for its big race “The 12 Hours of Sebring”. There is also plenty of shopping to include national retailers such as Home Depot, Lowes, WalMart, Michaels Crafts, J.C. Penney, and other specialty stores.
You will also enjoy shopping at the quaint local retail and antique shops. Sebring features many national restaurants to include Starbucks, Red Lobster, Chilies, Outback Steakhouse, Olive Garden, Panera Bread, and Cowboys.
